Event Details

In 1979, the Austin Runners Club organized a race on the roads around Decker Lake in east Austin and thus the Decker Challenge was born!

Today, the Decker Challenge, presented by Austin Achieve Public Schools road race is one of the longest-running races in Austin. This year we'll be celebrating our 44th annual event in person on Sunday, January 2nd, 2022! We have moved our race venue to COTA (Circuit of the Americas) due to pandemic closures. We are excited about the opportunity to race on the coveted COTA track and kick off the new year with a one of a kind racing experience!

We are also excited to announce that a portion of this year's proceeds will go to benefit two local Austin non-profit organizations: Marathon Kids and The Trail Foundation.

Interested in helping out for packet pick-up or race day? Click Here to sign up and volunteer!

Multiple race distance options:

  • 3.4 Miles: One lap around the track
  • 6.8 Miles: Two laps around the track
  • 10.2 Miles: Three laps around the track
  • 1K: Free kids race (12 & under)

You will be starting on the same line as the Indy and Formula 1 cars, and get to conquer the massive 150 foot hill on each loop! The rest of the course features the rolling hills Austin runners have come to expect from the Decker Challenge for the past 40+ years. Your surroundings will be ever changing from the paddock view, the beautiful Austin skyline, the famous COTA tower, and more.

Besides an unforgettable race experience at this unique venue, all finishers receive: the coveted long-sleeve technical fabric Decker shirt; post-race refreshments, and a Decker Challenge finisher's medal. Race photography is also included in registration.

Complete health and safety protocols are available on our website.
